PREVIEW: Golf: Tee it up!

Housemarque have been making quite a name for themselves over the past year - this group out of Finland, previously known for some classic games for the Amiga Computer, had come back in a big way on the PlayStation Network with the release of Super Stardust HD - a dual-stick shooter with fantastic visuals and the PSN answer to Geometry Wars - some would say it surpasses it.

So who would have thought their next title would be an XBLA exclusive golf game?

Golf: Tee It Up is the latest sports game to make its way to the Xbox Live Arcade - a genre which is particularly hasn't been seeing a lot of action. Golf: TIU plans to change that, and is also pushing some of the best graphics seen for the service.

The game features 36 holes over 2 courses - the bright Caribbean Beachside and the overcast Parklands. Both courses are lush with fauna, trees and everything you expect on a golf course. The game has a very simple style to it - almost cel-shaded in design. This is unlike the PlayStation 3's Hot Shots series, which uses cartoony characters in a more realistic setting. This makes the course much easier to see from a distance and still pleasing to the eye.

Unlike games like Hot Shots Golf on the PlayStation 3, the user creates their own character for Tee It Up. The player chooses their and from there you can choose from a variety of hairstyles, clothing and accessories. Despite the face staying the same - they barely look alike, creating your own personal character.

Tee It Up uses the classic 3-click golf interface, matching up the amount of power and accuracy you want - getting this right can push you just that little bit further to the fairway, or completely destroy your chances of par.

A new feature which makes Tee It Up differ to its competitors is the "focus feature" - or more accurately, an "after touch" mode similar to that of Burnout games. Each round you're given a limited amount of movement time for your ball while it's in the air, allowing you to just slightly alter the golf ball's trajectory so you can get that absurd shot you just took to land safely on the fairway, or nudge the ball into the hole. It's not realistic, but it gives the game that little bit of extra excitement.

It's easy to understand and get into. The game features many helpful camera angles of the course to help you avoid sand traps and rough terrain. The power meter also displays the height and kind of terrain that you will face, making it an easier task for the balls' flight.

Tee It Up will also feature 4 player Cooperative or Multiplayer locally and online in a stroke play match or tournament, as well as 2 player match play. With online play you won't have to wait for the other players to finish their turn - each player can play at the same time, and the terms for an online game is really open - 3 players can play on one console while searching for a 4th participant online.

Housemarque have also set up Tee It Up for Downloadable Content after the game is completed. They've already announced that they're in the early steps of an entirely new course being available close after release, based in the Desert, as well as brand new clothing for players to buy and use on their characters.

Golf: Tee It Up is slated for later this year, until then we'll keep you posted with the latest news and screens for the game when they're available.

GDC '08 - Lionhead Studios adds to the XBLA / Retail crossover experience.

In yesterdays Microsoft GDC Press Conference, Peter Molyneux took to the stage to discuss the upcoming game Fable 2. One of his big announcements is a new XBLA game that will tie in with the main game!

Just before the release of Fable 2 (Which is still unknown), Lion Head Studios will release an XBLA game - which will allow you to earn money. Then, in the first major crossover ability on XBLA - you can use the money earnt in the XBLA game can be used in the full retail game!

Similar ideas have been announced - Bionic Commando Rearmed will unlock a special skin to use in the retail game - but the ability to earn money before the games release will have the player be able to have a bit of cash before playing the retail copy!

Fable 2 will use Gambling to create money - so it might be good to assume this will be Fable 2: Parlor games.

Metanet also posted a blog about the upcoming release. They're clearly very excited (It is their first piece of software for sale!) which included some interesting facts about the policies of the XBLA and upcoming DLC:

There are also a couple sets of really cool gamerpics and themes in the LIVE Marketplace — we would have liked to put them up for free, but this is apparently against policy. It *is* a bit frustrating: it seems silly to us that gamers have to pay for something entirely superficial and not even part of the game! In any case, we’ll try to have preview pics up on Wednesday, so at least you can see what you’ll be getting. There will also be one or two level packs coming in the future, though we don’t really know the timing for that yet.. but we figure 450 levels should keep everyone busy for a while.

Spoke too soon: Discs of Tron coming next week!

The second Arcade Tron game is officially coming out next week!
"Discs of Tron is considered an arcade classic as it mesmerized fans who wanted an entertaining and challenging experience derived from the innovative film," said Craig Relyea, senior vice president of global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. "The game's release on Xbox LIVE Arcade enables multiple generations to play the addictive game in both its original form from 25 years ago and an enhanced mode with upgraded graphics and sound."

Apparently OXM gave Discs of Tron an 8/10 score, but some of these classics have been getting mixed reactions - particularly especially the first Tron.

Videos of DOT in Clasic and Enhanced mode have also shown up on Gamevideos. Check them out:

- Discs of Tron XBLA 'Classic' HD
- Discs of Tron XBLA 'Enhanced' HD

Now it's up in the air for what's coming out as well: Commanders or N? We'll know Monday, so stay tuned!

Duke Nukem 3D Unofficially official XBLA announcement?

The Dallas Business Journal added a new story that has caught 3D Realms a little off guard - not realizing that the writer would reprint everything they told him. Ah the difference between print and internet media.

In the article, it's confirmed that Duke Nukem 3D will be coming to the XBLA. 3D Realms retraction later on didn't hit on the XBLA announcement, only the date of Duke Nukem Forever, so we may consider this the Unofficial Announcement of the game.

Now bring on Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II on XBLA!!

Interview: Videogamer has a chat with SFIIHD's David Serlin

David Serlin, the man in charge of bringing Street Fighter II HD to the XBLA and PSN, has had a long and fascinating interview with Videogamer.com a few days ago. He's got some long answers to all your questions, you can see he's very dedicated to the product.

An interesting note that has been posted around is about the XBLA size limit:

VideoGamer.com: Does the 360 download limit cause any problems?

DS: Yes, it's difficult to store so many 1080p graphics in such a small download size. A lot depends on the specific shading that the final art will have, and how well that shading compresses. It also makes it difficult or impossible to include all the original game's music AND all remixed set of music. We're still doing our best to fit within the limit we've been given.

Currently the limit of XBLA games is 150 megabytes, while the PSN has no such limit due to the hard drive on every machine. If worse comes to worse, hopefully Capcom will release the game on XBLA complete with just remixed songs, and then have a free DLC addon pack including the classic tunes. It's how Worms initially got around their problem with sound banks. Let's just hope microsoft come to their senses.

Read the entire interview for a good look into this highly anticipated game.

What needs to be on the XBLA? #1 - Death Tank Zwei

Here's the first in what will hopefully a weekly / biweekly rant - What needs to be on the XBLA?

This week: Death Tank Zwei

If you don't know what Death Tank is, you didn't own a SEGA Saturn. This game - hidden within a copy of Duke Nukem 3D - is quite possibly the best multiplayer experience available for the system, better than Saturn Bomberman!

In order to play Death Tank, players needed to own a copy of Duke Nukem 3D and do one of two things - have your own copy of Exhumed or Quake (also made by Lobotomy Software) and a save file from either, or break every single toilet in the game. People may be scoffing at the latter, but you know some poor soul would do it for 20 achievement points in this day and age. You also needed a Multitap, for 7 player multiplayer.

But enough about the elaborate requirements needed for this game, what makes this game so awesome? It's just a load of fun!

The graphics aren't much to look at, but they don't need to be. Just looking at it you might think "Oh that just looks like Scorched Earth, Tank Wars, and Worms!" but you'd be wrong! Unlike those games, Death Tank is real-time!

You can move your Tank left and right to avoid attacks. Players can move an arrow to aim in a direction and the length of shot, and after a 'reload' time you can shoot off the next round. You can buy Hover coils and Jump Jets to fly around the landscape until they run out of juice, or buy yourself a shield to bounce away incoming bullets for a short period of time. There is nothing more satisfying in this game than shooting down some smart arse who's hovering in the air.

Up to 7 players can play Death Tank, give yourself a name and choose round count and away you go! Each player is randomly thrown onto the battlefield, and your only mission is to kill everyone else. Killing people gives you points, points buy new weaponry, and new weaponry gives you more kills! Repeat this until the game ends and a winner is declared!

The game features a large array of weapons you can buy with points, such as Nukes that make giant holes in the landscape, Missiles which can be controlled to fly into other players, MIRVs which will split into several explosions, your mine which can get other players by rolling down hills, and your air strikes which just blow everything away.

The game will also randomly throw players a Blitz Round! In this round, the reload time for weaponry decreases dramatically, it's a hail of bullets!

If this was to come to the XBLA, not a whole lot would need to change. An actual single player mode is completely unnecessary, just having local and online multiplayer would be enough. With widescreen support, boosting the player list from 7 to 8 should be a snap, add some new weapons, maybe remove some of the useless ones (I don't think Target Comp ever worked), and you're set!

Blowing up people online would be an absolute blast, and even if players start quitting before the game is up, it’s still plenty of fun with only a few players. Even local play could have a chance of 8 player mayhem – it’s just possible to use the Xbox controller for two players, similar to that of the classic Micro Machines controller schemes. Nobody should miss out!

Death Tank’s chances of coming to the XBLA depend on a few issues. The game was made by one man - Ezra Dreisbach. Dreisbach is currently working at Snowblind Studios. He has mentioned in some interviews that he wishes to make a stand alone Death Tank game, let’s hope that the XBLA is his answer.

Rumor: Pants coming to XBLA?

Notorious rumormonger Surfergirl has suggested that one of Rare's upcoming XBLA games will star non other than Mr. Pants - their ridiculous website mascot.

Mr. Pants previously received his own game in the way of It's Mr. Pants! on the Game boy Advance - itself reworked from the unreleased game Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers that they were working on before being bought by Microsoft. The game style would certainly get more appeal as a XBLA game.

Source: Surfer Girl: Just remember this - in this country they drive on the wrong side of the road.

Your second game this week is: Chessmaster Live!

Still waiting for that ultimate Chess experience? Then Chessmaster Live might be what you're looking for.

"A downloadable version of Ubisoft’s hit “Chessmaster” series, “Chessmaster Live” allows players to test and tune their chess skills against the AI or opponents of all aptitudes around the globe via Xbox LIVE. “Chessmaster Live” features five original chess variants, including a Message Chess option, which allows gamers to engage in matches over the span of several days, weeks or even months. The title boasts both beautifully crafted 3D chess sets inspired by luxury chess board designer House of Staunton."

The game will be available on Wednesday for 800 Microsoft Points. Chessmaster is well known for its excellent Chess AI, so if you're hurting from Spyglass' board games, this might be what you're looking for, or Shotest Shogi (A popular chess variant in Japan) coming later this year via AI Factory.
